Dragons in Paddington for a Day on 15 July 2010
Paddington was alive with activity with the annual charity Dragon Boat Race on Thursday 15 July. This is organised every year by Paddington Waterside Partnership. Twelve teams competed in the race whilst fundraising for their selected local sports charity. The teams paddled what looked like an oversized canoe with an ornately carved dragon's head at the front and a tail at the rear, to the beat of a drum. The winners of the race were Development Securities, whilst Paddington Rotary Club were awarded for raising the most money and M&S (the Oompa Loompas) for the best dressed team.
Each team raised money for a selected charity beneficiary, identified through Paddington Waterside Partnership's Time for Paddington programme, which connects the companies at Paddington to their surrounding communities and charities. The winning team, 'Sucking Diesel' (Development Securities), raced and fundraised for Active Inspirations, who returned the favour by helping them in their rowing efforts. This resulted in them scooping up the first prize in union in a tightly-matched final with the Paddington Bears (Paddington Rotary Club).
Teams and charities had a chance to meet up at the event, each pair forging great camaraderie and giving a face to each and every worthy cause. It was a truly heart-warming occasion that painted a positive picture of London's youth, their huge potential and proving just how they can benefit from sport, community spirit and inspirational fundraising events such as Dragon Boat Racing. This was the true measure of the success of this event and what can be achieved in Paddington.
Kay Buxton, Chief Executive of Paddington Waterside Partnership said "Once again, Dragon Boat Racing has inspired teams from local companies and groups to unite, take to the water and fundraise for local charities. We were more than delighted with the efforts this year, with household names such as M&S, Visa and Starbucks racing and raising money for seven local charities. The evening was a great success, with all teams showing wonderful competitive spirit in an exhilarating atmosphere."
The event was sponsored by European Land and Property, developers of Paddington Basin and the new Merchant Square scheme. Prizes were donated by Development Securities, Heathrow Express, See Cafe and Metro Golf.

Norfolk Square Garden awarded Green Flag Status
Winning a Green Flag Awards brings excellent publicity. Both the media and the public are becoming increasingly aware that a site flying a Green Flag is a high quality green space. We realise that all green spaces are different and this diversity is welcomed. Each site is judged on its own merits and suitability to the community it serves.
Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag status. Throughout the land the owners, managers and staff of many parks and green spaces work tirelessly to ensure their application for the prestigious Green Flag Award is successful. The number of applicants increases year after year and, with this increasing interest in the scheme, it is clear the Green Flag Award scheme is a resounding success.
There has recently been much discussion about the declining quality of our city parks and lack of focus upon rural green spaces. While this is undoubtedly a cause for concern in many places there are also many examples of thriving, popular sites run by dedicated, enthusiastic people working closely with their local communities. Many places that were run-down and neglected just a few years ago are now shining examples of outstanding green space management, and this shows the way forward. The Green Flag Award Scheme is the impetus to an ever-increasing improvement in the quality of our parks and green spaces.

James Glancy Design Plugs Up Paddington Basin
A new addition to Paddington Basin is attracting much interest. A giant plug and hole, by James Glancy Design, has been installed on the floor of Paddington Basin where the canal has been drained to enable construction work at Merchant Square.
Developers of the Merchant Square scheme, European Land and Property, commissioned the work to create a novel and fun focal point, visually representing the empty canal.
